BENEFITS OF ART AND CULTURE TO OUR CLIENTS AND THE ECONOMY

The art and culture sector is a broad, diverse and multi-dimensional area of endeavour and a source of enjoyment to all. Art is an invitation to become part of something that is larger than you. Arts and culture surrounds us, we are immersed in them. They influence our lives in ways most of us do not recognize. However, the benefits of the arts and culture are generally poorly described and understood. Since the sector must compete with other demands for public and private funds, it is important that it put forward the best argument possible in support of its case at all times.

The power of Art and culture impacts tremendous influence on the economy by: employing artist and ancillary personnel, providing indirect income and employment benefits that, in turn, produce direct expenditures which reverberate through out the economy. They serve as a catalyst for economic development, enhance the aesthetics of a community, attract a well educated public, and increase property value.

Benefit of Art and Culture to Businesses

Art and culture are good for the local and national economy. They stimulate economic revitalization. Cultural tourism is one of several ways that art and culture impacts directly on the economy. A thriving arts community is therefore crucial for the health and vitality of the economy.

The need to introduce products to new and foreign, sometimes reluctant communities is a factor that should motivate businesses to support art and cultural events.  These are the economic, political and social aspects of Art and culture that encourages corporate art sponsorship or corporate philanthropy

Art and Culture can be used through sponsorship and strategic philanthropy to directly support sales, brand-building and strategic business goals. The arts are a great way to gain visibility and access to a target market.

Art, Culture and Tourism development

If there is one sector whose fate is intimately bound up with that of tourism, it is clearly that of the Art and craft. Indeed, whatever the type of tourism (resort holiday tourism or tour holidays), the tourist never fails to take home the obligatory souvenir. Tourism has developed into a new market for the Arts and handicrafts industry, and the articulation of the tourism Arts and handicrafts mechanism is seen through the creation of new products directed towards the domestic and foreign tourist demands.

The link between the art and craft sector and tourism is important and complex. The objective should be to cater not only for travelers buying crafts as souvenirs but also to more sophisticated customers who demand products requiring extra skills and high quality. Tourist demand can provide the basis for the growth and diversification of artisanal production and the creation of markets in major tourist areas. The ways of improving present conditions lies in an extension of the existing market. Apart from an increase in tourism, this can be realized either by handicrafts regaining some part of the local market, which they have lost through competition from imported industrially-produced goods, or by their finding a direct export market. Tourism therefore provides economic benefits as well as emphasizing the cultural and identity aspects of the local population of the host country through art and craft, it also serves as a tool for job creation and raising the level of economic welfare.

Job Creation through Art
The arts and culture create jobs and help in driving economic growth, they attract visitors to a community, and generate spending that flows into household incomes and tax coffers.
So arts do create jobs, income and taxes, and schools and social-services agencies increasingly are using the arts to improve the performance of their students and the well-being of their clients.
Also, the arts are a critical ingredient to healthy communities, which can reap healthy returns for public and private investment in the arts.
A large number of those who work in the art and cultural sector are self-employed. Of cultural workers who are “artists” or “creators,” more than half are self-employed. This means that art and culture workers, more than perhaps most other workers, are free to elect where they will live and work. Even better, nearly 4 out of 5 of these jobs are full time. Majority of arts and culture workers possess a post-secondary degree or diploma.
Arts and Culture jobs are “smart” jobs! And arts education encourages workers to think creatively and inspire innovation – a capacity now in high demand by today’s global, knowledge-based business and industry.

Importance of Art and Culture to Education and Literacy
Numerous studies show a positive “feed-back” relationship between arts exposure and academic performance. For example, learning to play a musical instrument tends to reinforce and build math skills; dramatic and visual arts contribute to stronger reading abilities.
Contemporary studies in neuroplasticity demonstrate that senior citizens who undertake an arts activity rejuvenate the brain’s neuronal activity by as much as 10% to 15% staving off premature senility as well as causing an overall increase in physical health.
Education in the arts teaches team-work, creative problem solving, non-violent expression and self-discipline, and instills a sense of pride in students, their families and their communities. Arts have been shown to be of particular importance to children and adults at risk. They offer opportunities for self-expression and exploration and help to build skills, discipline and pride that lead to fulfilling careers and leisure activities. Arts education builds positive networks and mentoring relationships between practicing artists in a community and young people.
When we consider the contribution of arts and culture to the nation in terms of full cost accounting; the benefits in terms of increased physical and mental health; the reduced risk of social marginalization as well as the substantial economic offshoots of a vibrant arts and culture to a community it only stands to reason that the country will yield even greater returns for its citizens from well considered and generous support for arts and cultural organizations and practitioners.
